FWD....

Hi Guys and Dolls,

Want to see a visually sumptuous, sugar coated circus/theatre show packed to the brim with hula hoops, comedy, burlesque, dance, magic, shadow puppets and a two headed, hula hooping, Barbarella styled beauty!? Great, read on, because Heidi Hoops will be presenting LOST AND FOUND THE SUGAR CANDY SHOW at the Sydney Fringe from the 10th to the 16th Sept - There are only 5 shows so don't miss out on this epic tale about a hula hooper who looses her head!

You can also look out for the interview in the wrap around in the SMH on sat 4th September for more info.

Our crew this year is an all girl team from the Gong, Ann Burbrook, Amber Silk, Emma Lockheart Wison and Rachel Dallywater and Heidi Hillier. We've been working hard in the studio reworking our show with a great soundtrack, new shadow scenes, new costumes and bigger and better hula hoop tricks to entertain you.

And we need your help ... Please help us to get the word out on the street by telling all your best Sydney friends that Sugar Candy's the show that can't be missed!

Follow these 3 easy steps to help us get gorgeous bums on our seats:

1. Tell your friends - go to our facebook page and share the event with your friends (easy)

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=104548769597098

2. Organise a night out in Sydney with your friends or loved one - you can book your tickets now (fun)

3. Forward this email to your friends in Sydney with a recommendation, and or print out the attached poster and and put it on the notice board at work or the local cafe. (easier than you think)

Thank you so much for your time and generous assistance - every little bit helps and we hope to see you there!

Warmest Regards,

Heidi and the team!

REAL FWD: Sapphisticated Soiree Sydney, October (performers wanted)

FWD......

Dear REAL,

This is advance notice regarding an event in which I am involved in organising. This one day cultural event for older lesbians which will take place in Sydney on International Lesbian Day. We are greatly in need of lesbian performers and artists to contribute their work, as well as audience to attend this fabulous one off event.

I am hoping that funding will come through which will enable all Performers to be paid a small/token amount towards expenses. Please note that this amount is unlikely to cover your full costs, but it is a way of recognising your contribution to our culture.

If you are interested in participating in any way please email:
janegreen.5654@yahoo.com.au

In case you are inclined to publicise this even through your own lesbian networks, I have included a flyer about the event itself, which contains the information below.

REAL Fwd: LGBTI final 2010 report - Not So Private Lives

Dear LGBTQI community group members or supporters,

Late last year The University of Queensland released an intermediate report based on some of the 'Relationship Recognition' (marriage vs. civil unions vs. de facto) findings from the Australia-wide Not So Private Lives survey.  The online survey was sent to your group/organisation and therefore you or some of your group members may have participated in this survey.   This full and final report provides further information on the topic of relationship recognition (see Chapters 5 and 6 ) and presents results based on many other aspects  of sexual minority life (see content below).   Links to the full report are below (the report is also available on facebook).  A small number of hard copies are also available upon request (see contact details).

2010 FULL REPORT – LGBTI National Findings on Relationships and Well-Being

The final and full report of the Australian national NOT SO PRIVATE LIVES survey is now available online.

The 2,032 participants were 18-82 years of age, from each state and territory, and from metropolitan and rural Australia.  Results are presented based on gender identity (male, female, and gender different), six age groups (18-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-82) and three age cohorts (<25 yrs, 25-34 yrs, 35+ yrs).  Additional findings are provided for transgender/transsexual and intersex participants.

Findings are presented in easy-to-interpret coloured graphs.

Findings include:

·         Chapter 3 - Significant gender identity and age cohort differences on awareness and first disclosure of same-sex attractions

·         Chapter 4 - Preferred timing of disclosure of sexuality in everyday encounters (based on 3 hypothetical situations presented in the survey)

o   Preferred timing of disclosure for those partnered vs. not partnered

o   Influence of religion on disclosure

·         Chapter 5 - Personal preference for relationship recognitionmarriage vs. civil unions vs. de facto – findings presented at the Australian Federal Senate hearing of the inquiry into the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill 2009 and in the book 'Why vs. Why Marriage' (for the 'Yes' argument presented by Rodney Croome).

o   Majority personal preference for marriage found for all states

o   Significant age differences for preferred relationship recognition

o   Perceptions of how others (including friends and family) value one's own same-sex relationship compared with heterosexual marriages and de facto relationships, and the significant relationship between these perceptions and well-being

o   Significant gender differences for relationship status and length of relationships

·         Chapter 6 - Numbers living with and planning on having children

o   Greater numbers of young males (<25 yrs) planning on having children

o   Close to 50% females in 35+ age cohort have children in lives – large majority currently in a same-sex relationship

o   75-80% of those with partner and living full-time with young children (under 13 yrs) want to marry

·         Chapter 7 – Partner support and relationship satisfaction

o   Significant age differences in being similar to one's partner in feeling comfortable with sexuality and 'coming-out'

o   Partner similarity with comfort in 'coming out' and its significant prediction of relationship satisfaction

·         Chapter 8 – Contact with and support from GLBTI friends and community

o   Differences based on age and metropolitan vs. rural area of residence

o   Young (<25 yrs) least contact with GLBTI community

·         Chapter 9 -The role of mainstream acceptance in addition to support from similar others in predicting well-being

o   Acceptance from friends, family, and broader community and significant prediction of well-being even when taking into account the level of GLBTI support.

·         Chapter 10 - Psychological Well-Being

o   Positive and Negative Mood (PANAS) and comparisons with a random sample from the Australian general population and national LGB sample from the US.

o   Gender identity and age differences on 6 dimensions of well-being:

§  Self-acceptance

§  Purpose in life

§  Autonomy

§  Personal growth

§  Environmental mastery

§  Positive relations with others

REAL Fwd: LIK LISA MIstresschef invitation Sun 22 August

Eunice Koogan.JPGLIK LISA Mistresschef 2010

Back by popular demand!

Local lesbians from Kiama and Shoalhaven will gather again for a home cooking bonanza where cakes and scones, ganesh, soufflé, consome, and other luscious goodies will be dished and doshed around the kitchen.

Once again, LIK (Lesbians In Kiama) and LISA (Lesbians In Shoalhaven Area) will co-host the LIK LISA MistressChef event at Rose Valley on Sunday August 22nd, 12 noon to 5 pm.

Last year the judges were dazzled by Eunice Koogan's international delicacies and improvised aplomb, and she emotionally received the LIK LISA Mistresschef award saying,"I've never won anything like this before!"

Now Eunice is back as the special guest judge of this year's Mistresschef. In addition to being a qualified scuba diving instructor, Eunice has been working in the food industry since the age of 12 when she began peeling potatoes in a fish and chip shop. Earlier she made her first tart at the age of 6! Having cooked for 3 prime ministers, she is looking forward to tasting the delicacies that LIK LISA lesbians will serve up this year.

To join the fun

1.    Call and register as a contestant or a guest

2.    Cook and bring your dish for entry into 1 of 3 categories:

a)    CWA Bake off

b)   International or

c)    Fusion

3.    Or, come as a guest to watch and eat

All contestants and judges bring an ingredient to donate for the cook off.

6 finalists will cook-off after lunch, using the mystery ingredient of the day!

Prizes, surprises, new activities and fun for all. Join in, taste and try, and see last year's footage too.

Be there or be hungry!

REAL FW: Next Bush Lemons Calendar (Aug - Nov)

Hi all

Attached is the next Bush Lemons calendar which runs from August to November this year.  There are a couple of non-walking things that are included (a fundraising garage sale, Oxfam Trailwalker) but I thought you'd appreciate knowing about them in advance.

There are also a couple of walks in August and September which cover the first 2 sections of the Trek for Timor walk on 18 September.  So if you are planning on doing that event, these walks will be of assistance, plus are just very nice walks to do in any event.  We also have our next combined camping weekend in November - when its warmed up!  This camp will be at Dunns Swamp, a couple of hours from the mountains.  If you haven't been to this camping spot yet, then you are in for a real treat as its just one of the most beautiful places to visit, and no swamp in sight!  Many thanks to Raewyn, Ilsa and Sharron who are also putting walks on the calendar.  I haven't put on an overnight walk which I was hoping to do, but I may do this as a more spontaneous thing to the group when I know I have some spare time over the next few months.

Don't forget that our Oxfam Fundraising dinner is not far away.  We do need you to book ASAP so we'll have an idea of numbers.  The evening will be fun and and we are planning on having long, communal tables so it will be social and inclusive.  We have the Rhodo Lodge, which is set in the rhodo gardens, for the evening and its a lovely building with a verandah that overlooks the gardens too.  Not only will you have an enjoyable evening, but you'll also be supporting Bush Lemons and helping us raise funds for Oxfam Australia.

Cheers
Jocelyn
